Man, Myth, Messiah: Fear and Love

CONNECT
  • What in the message most stood out to you? What do you think God is telling you through this message?
  • What is your greatest fear as a child and at present?
WORD
  • 35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”[c] 36 He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” John 9:35-39 (Read John 9 for context)
  • “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10 (ESV)
  • Jesus gives abundant life but there is a problem. Fear robs us from that life. With unhealthy fear, we miss out on certain aspects of life. In John 9:18-23, Jesus has healed the parents greatest sorrow but they didn’t have the courage to publicly praise, no courage to be thankful because fear had a stronghold on their life.
APPLICATION
  • How did the man respond to Jesus? (John 9:38) What led him to believe and worship?
  • How has fear inhibited your life in the past? How did God set you free from your fears?
  • What needs to happen to remove fear from your life? Who do you need to thank that you’re not thanking? What needs to be done that you are not doing? Who needs to be loved that you’re not loving?
PRAYER
  • Thank God for replacing our fears with peace and for giving us abundant life. Pray that you’ll always choose to live in love, power and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7)
  • Intercede for your family members and friends who have not received Christ as their Lord and Savior. Pray for opportunities to present the gospel to them, even this week.
